Merengue Merengue
is a great beginner
dance because the
steps are simple and
fun and yet there
are challenging
patterns at higher
levels -- it's all
about the arms!
Merengue has lots of
turns, head loops
and arm pretzels.
The
Merengue came from
the Dominican
Republic, where
today it is the
national dance.
Some
stories say that the
Merengue's
foot-dragging style
came about when the
people of the
Dominican Republic
copied the dancing
style of one of
their wounded war
heroes. Others say
Merengue derived
from a Dominican
dance called the
"paso de la
empalizada"
(pole-fence step).
